Simon Brooks Culture of Thinking Strategy No. 5 – What Makes You Say That?

The fourth Cultures of Thinking Strategy for parents in supporting their children to become self-directed learners was sent out last Friday. We hope found it very informative and useful. If you missed this email, click here to view Strategy No. 4

Strategy No. 5 – What makes you say that?
By simply asking, “What makes you say that?” in a curious and non-judgemental tone after your child shares their thinking, we are able to get a window into the reasoning behind their ideas. When we ask this question of our children, we create the expectation that they must justify every comment they make and every idea they have. It is a powerful way of building a family culture where thinking is valued, visible and actively promoted. We know this is working when our children start asking us the same question.
